Design brief & vision
A sloping front garden in Bromley, with the house set above the street. The owners wanted the approach to feel composed and deliberate, with planting that earned its keep through the year.
Key features
Tiered timber retaining walls reshape the slope into clear levels, each terrace planted differently. Hydrangeas form the body of the planting, with clipped evergreen hedging providing the structure. The approach to the front door now reads as a sequence of layers rather than a steep climb.
Planting scheme
Hydrangeas (paniculata and arborescens) carry the long flowering season, their colour shifting from green to white to blush across the summer. Clipped evergreens hold the structure year-round. Lower silver foliage and hardy perennials soften the bed edges and spill over the timber.
The result
From the street, a calm and structured frontage. From the front door, a planted journey on the way in and out of the house. The slope, once a problem, has become the design.
