Design brief & vision
The brief was to create a modern outdoor space that balanced strong architectural elements with natural softness. The client wanted a garden that could serve multiple functions: entertaining, relaxation, and working from home. Our vision was to create a space layered with discovery, where materials, planting, and structure worked together to deliver both beauty and practicality.
Key features
The garden unfolds across levels, with striking corten steel steps in warm rust tones forming the sculptural heart of the design. At the summit, a bespoke outdoor office provides a secluded, elevated retreat for work, framed by the garden's planting and mature trees. Complementing the steel steps are pale composite decking areas and gravel pathways, chosen for texture, tone, and durability. These surfaces extend seating and entertaining areas while ensuring the garden remains low-maintenance. The entire space is framed by twisted canopy wisteria trees, adding sculptural form and seasonal drama, while layered planting spills across the levels to soften the architectural lines.
Planting scheme
The planting was designed to bring contrast and cohesion to the architectural framework. Evergreen structure ensures year-round interest, while seasonal layers of shrubs and perennials add colour, texture, and movement. Planting cascades across corten steel edges and gravel pathways, enhancing the naturalistic feel and softening the hard materials. Twisted wisteria trees introduce height, shade, and spectacle as they shift through the seasons.
The result
This Chislehurst garden is a showcase of contemporary tiered garden design. From its sculptural corten steel steps to the secluded outdoor office, it combines elegance with functionality. Composite decking and gravel pathways provide rhythm and contrast, while wisteria and lush planting frame the garden with natural beauty.
